Lawmakers Ask FDA to Help Farmers with FSMA

Cindy ZimmermanGovernment, NFU, Regulation, Safety

fsmaSenator Chris Murphy and Rep. Rosa DeLauro, both Democrats from Connecticut, this week joined with 12 other members of Congress in calling for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to implement programs to help family farmers and ranchers comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

In letters to FDA Acting Commissioner Dr. Stephen Ostroff, the lawmakers stressed the importance of ensuring that small farms meet the new food safety requirements, and called for the expedited implementation of provisions in the law to assist small farmers, small producers, and fruit and vegetable merchant wholesalers in making timely and accurate business decisions for the upcoming year.

The letter notes that “misinformation is already circulating” about the law and it is essential to communicate to farmers “about implementation deadlines, training opportunities, and future technical assistance is critical to timely and accurate compliance.”

National Farmers Union (NFU) President Roger Johnson agrees. “There is a great deal of confusion surrounding FSMA’s requirements for family farmers and ranchers,” said Johnson. “The FDA needs to ensure U.S. producers are provided with proper technical assistance, training and guidance related to the FSMA regulations. NFU thanks the 14 congressional leaders who urged the FDA to offer necessary support to our nation’s family producers.”

Joining Murphy and DeLauro on the letter were U.S. Sens. Al Franken, D-Minnesota, Angus King, I-Maine, Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, Bernard Sanders, I-Vermont, Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, Chris Coons, D-Delaware, Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisconsin, Tom Carper, D-Delaware, Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan, and U.S. Reps. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., Sam Farr, D-California, and Chellie Pingree, D-Maine.

History and Future for GEOSYS at InfoAg

infoag15-39-geosysRecently Damien Lepoutre, Founder and CEO of GEOSYS, spoke with Jamie at the InfoAg Conference in St. Louis, Mo.  Lepoutre started the company nearly three decades ago when precision ag looked quite a bit different.

“When I started this company 27 years ago the concepts you see here, they were already there, but we didn’t have all the technology so we tried to develop the concepts before it was more cumbersome, it was more complex.  But now, with the Internet, with more satellites,  it is easier to provide this service,” Lepourte says of his business, which focuses on providing data via satellites so growers can make better decisions in an increasingly complex environment.

And data is not in short supply.  While many companies are developing software for use in precision farming, GEOSYS has years worth of data to plug into those systems.  For those in the corn belt the company can provide daily images of their fields.

“People want to a have real information when they come to talk to us. They don’t like to see promises.  They want to see stuff they can make use of,” Lepourte notes.

Chuck ZimmermanAgribusiness, Audio, Equipment, John Deere, Tractor, Video

John Deere 9RXThis morning John Deere revealed a brand new high horsepower tractor – the 9RX. Here it is on the showroom floor of the John Deere Waterloo Tractor, Cab, Assembly Operations facility where it is being built. I recorded the program this morning which features moderator Michelle Rook, WNAX.

After years of design, field trials and customer feedback, John Deere introduces its first-ever 4-track tractor, adding to its extensive line of high horsepower 9R Series wheeled and 9RT Series 2-track tractors. The four new 9RX Tractor models – which range from 470 to 620 engine horsepower – feature a large, robust undercarriage and track system engineered to provide superior power, durability, and improved ride quality, especially when handling large implements in the field.

Jerry Griffith, John Deere product marketing manager, 6-9 Family Tractors, says the new 9RX Series Tractors offer customers three distinct advantages compared to similar 4-track models. “The 9RX has a superior undercarriage with a positive-drive track system that effectively delivers power to the ground; it features the outstanding comfort of our CommandView III cab with a new cab suspension system for improved ride quality; and it is designed with integrated performance features already available on our 9 Family of tractors.”

Jamie JohansenZimmPoll

New Holland ZimmPollOur latest ZimmPoll asked the question, “Who’s your pick now for GOP candidate?”

When you have nearly 20 GOP candidates, you are bound to have many opinions. Our latest ZimmPoll proves that, but one opinion was clear. Donald Trump took the majority of the votes. The rest were scattered. Candidates from both sides had the opportunity to speak at the Iowa State Fair’s Soapbox, but I believe it’s too early to form a strong opinion.

Here are the poll results:

  • Jeb Bush – 7%
  • Ben Carson – 10%
  • Chris Christie – 4%
  • Ted Cruz – 5%
  • Mark Everson – 0%
  • Carly Fiorina – 8%
  • Jim Gilmore – 2%
  • Lindsey Graham – 1%
  • Mike Huckabee – 5%
  • Bobby Jindal – 2%
  • John Kasich – 9%
  • George Pataki – 1%
  • Rand Paul – 0%
  • Rick Perry – 1%
  • Marco Rubio – 6%
  • Rick Santorum – 1%
  • Donald Trump – 30%
  • Scott Walker – 6%

Kelly MarshallAgribusiness, Events

Ag-Showcase-LogoThe Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Mo will soon play host to the seventh annual Ag Innovation Showcase.  On September 14-16 the spotlight will be on four women-owned businesses.  Each company will showcase their breaking new technology in renewable and sustainable agriculture.

These four firms are a few of the 19 companies that will be at the Showcase.  Between them they will be presenting some of the most innovative renewable and sustainable solutions, biological technologies, farming innovations and precision agriculture.

Oakland, Calif.-based Mango Materials produces biodegradable plastics from waste biogas (methane) that are economically competitive with conventional oil-based plastics.  All three company co-founders, including Molly Morse, chief executive officer, are women.

Advanced water desalination and purification technology, Micro-DesalTM, developed by Wise, Va.-based Micronic Technologies can clean water from any source using a mobile, high-efficiency, low-maintenance purification system free of chemicals, filters, and membranes.  Karen Sorber is majority owner, chief executive officer, and executive chair.

Based in Nashville, Tenn., Stony Creek Colors is the leading U.S. manufacturer of bio-based dyes for the textile industry.  Led by Sarah Bellos, founder and chief executive officer, the firm aims to domestically cultivate 15,000 acres of indigo in the next five years.

Madison, Wis.-based Whole Trees Architecture & Structures takes a previously ignored waste product – non-milled, round-timber renewable cullings that are four to 21 inches in diameter – from sustainably managed forests, and engineers cost-efficient, sustainable structural systems for commercial and residential buildings.  Amelia Baxter is president and co-founder.

“There is a significant underrepresentation of women-owned companies in ag tech, but we’re working to change that,” said Rohit Shukla, chief executive officer of Larta Institute, which is directing the Showcase and is one of its three organizers. “Ag Innovation Showcase is the ideal forum for promoting the tremendous potential of our presenting companies and attracting the investments that will enable them to expand and grow in a time of great promise.”

GROWMARK and FS Help Farm Progress Show Go

Cindy Zimmermanagronomy, Audio, Farm Progress Show, FS System, Growmark

fps13-fsGROWMARK and the FS System always go all out when the Farm Progress Show is held in their home state of Illinois and this year will be no exception.

GROWMARK Marketing and Communications Manager Beverly Long says GROWMARK has a presence at the Farm Progress Show on behalf of the FS System retailers in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and in Ontario and they are directly involved with the show on several levels, one being the agronomic sponsorship where FS donates all the product for the demonstration acres at the show. “We supply all the seed, fertility, plant health and crop protection on the approximately 385 acres,” Long explains, noting that the corn for the harvest demonstrations was planted April 15 and looked good despite all the rain that the state had in May and June.

In addition, FS is the official fuel provider for the all the equipment used for the demonstrations. “Dieselex Gold is inside the tanks of all of those engines,” said Long.

growmark-bevBesides providing the inputs and fuel to make the show happen, Long says they will have lots of fun and games at their exhibit. “We’re going to be celebrating the bounty of ag by inviting our guests to turn their fun into food for hungry kids, seniors, and everybody in between,” said Long. For everyone who plays the “Farm Finder” game, FS will donate a dollar to Feeding America, No Kid Hungry, and Meals on Wheels. “By the end of the three days, we hope that we can donate up to $15,000 to those three organizations,” Long added.

GROWMARK and FS will also be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Hi-Soy brand by announcing the winners of their Golden Sweepstakes.

Learn more about what GROWMARK and FS will be doing at next week’s Farm Progress Show in Decatur in this interview, and make sure to stop by their exhibit, have some fun and help feed some hungry folks! Corn Growers, Monsanto Award Grant for Bt Corn Study

John DavisAg Group, Corn, Monsanto, NCGA

NCGA-Logo-3The National Corn Growers Association and the Monsanto Insect Management Knowledge Program are funding a study into Bt corn. This NCGA news release says Dr. Felicia Wu from Michigan State University received a grant for the proposal titled “An Agent Based Model of Insect Adaptation to Transgenic Insecticidal Corn.”

NCGA believes farmers should have as many options as possible to control pests. This project will develop a model to factors impacting the effectiveness of Bt corn that includes many factors that affect insect adaptation to the Bt proteins in corn, such as farmer behaviors, refuge strategy, insecticide usage, combination of traits used, crop rotation and others. Researchers hope to identify strategies that will achieve the greatest long-term effectiveness of Bt corn.

Understanding how insect resistance develops helps shape best management practices and mitigation actions that prevent the weakening of the technology’s effectiveness, thus NCGA continues to work with industry and government on resistance management.

The Monsanto Insect Management Knowledge Program is a 10-member advisory committee consisting of academics and growers. It provides merit-based awards for outstanding research that will not only enhance the collective understanding of insect management but also address significant challenges and issues in agriculture.

Kelly MarshallAgribusiness, Crop Protection, seed

united suppliers logoUnited Suppliers, Inc. and Land O’Lakes, Inc. have chosen to merge the United Suppliers with Land O’Lakes’ crop inputs business. The decision comes as a result of the recent successes of both companies and aims to create a single system of independent agricultural retailers.

land o lakes“This merger will allow us to continue to meet our customers’ needs through each company’s successful go-to-market strategy while providing for the size and scale to compete in an environment of consolidating suppliers and competitors,” said Chris Policinski, President and CEO of Land O’Lakes, Inc. “We are excited to bring our WinField business and United Suppliers together and expect our members, owners and customers will benefit greatly from this merger.”

Under the merger, Ames, Iowa-based United Suppliers, Inc. will join with Arden Hills, Minnesota-based Land O’Lakes, Inc.’s crop inputs business. Customers are expected to benefit from expanded product offerings, enhanced precision agriculture services, tools and technologies, improved product insights, consulting services and more.

“Both organizations exist to increase our customers’ capabilities and competitiveness. By coming together, we are true to our shared purpose, and we also preserve our different approaches to best serve a wide variety of customer needs,” said Brad Oelmann, President and CEO of United Suppliers, Inc. “Together, we are positioned to protect and build the future of independent agricultural operations in an environment of consolidation.”

The deal is expected to close in October 2015.

MO Farm Bureau Speaks Out Against WOTUS

Jamie JohansenAg Group, Audio, environment, Farm Bureau, Government, Regulation, water

msf-15-85-editedThe Missouri Farm Bureau has put together interactive maps to give a feel of how the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule that goes into effect this weekend will impact the state. Well over 95% of the state of Missouri will qualify as a water of the U.S. under this rule.

I spoke with Blake Hurst, president of the Missouri Farm Bureau before they held a press conference at last week’s Missouri State Fair to learn more about how the WOTUS final ruling and how others forms of over regulation will impact agriculture.

“The House has passed a bill that would stop WOTUS. It has not been voted on in the Senate. The most important thing to do right now is to get a hold of our senators and tell them to vote to stop the final rule on Water of the U.S. I think it can be done. It will be a big challenge. We need to send a strong message that the final rule is bad for agriculture and anyone who moves dirt.”

Blake said he is also very concerned about the new Clean Air ruling. He recently spoke with the head of Missouri’s Rural Electric Cooperative and they will soon have an estimate on how much it will increase electric bills. They are guessing as much as a 50% increase. “That is an example of regulation that affects people in their pocketbook and will affect them very soon. We need to be aware of what is happening to us and get active.”
