2013 Farm Progress Show was a Good One

Cindy ZimmermanAudio, Farm Progress Show

fps13-aerialThe 60th Annual Farm Progress Show wrapped up Thursday in Decatur, Illinois and Show Manager Matt Jungmann says the weather was hot, the crowds were strong and the field demonstrations … well, that’s just Mother Nature.

“For the first time in 60 years we couldn’t harvest a crop because it wasn’t mature,” Jungmann said, but they are already putting it in the rear view mirror. Planning for future years at Progress City are already underway, making notes and continuing to keep moving ahead to make the Farm Progress Show the place to be for all the latest and greatest agriculture has to offer. The show may be over but we still have lots of interviews to share from the event that will be posted on through next week. Stay tuned and check out the photo album to see hundreds of sights from the show.

Precision.AgWired.com Podcast: New old technologies

Meghan GrebnerConservation, Nutrient Management, Precision Pays Podcast, Weed control

pp-podcastWhat was once considered old is now becoming popular again.  Cameron Mills is a Beck’s Hybrids seed dealer and farms in Indiana.  Earlier this month he was presenting at Becknology Days in Atlanta, Ind.  He says farmers are looking for ways to carry over nutrients in the soil.  One of the best ways to do that, he says, is by utilizing cover crops.

In this Precision.AgWired.com Podcast we’ll look at one of those “older technologies” that is making a comeback.

Leah GuffeyAudio, Equipment, Farm Progress Show, John Deere

fps-13-deere-tracksJohn Deere has been showing off its 2014 product line to farmers this week at the Farm Progress Show, and the big news for the S-Series combines is that for the first time ever, John Deere will be offering 36″ tracks for better flotation with reduced compaction and fuel use in challenging field conditions.

Product specialist Jordan Danner says the tracks allow reduced ground pressure and the ability to harvest in a variety of conditions. They are designed with a high-idler configuration for enhanced performance and easy changeability between tracks and tires. Other enhancements to the S-Series line-up include a new Interactive Combine Adjustment™ (ICA) in base equipment which automates combine settings while harvesting on-the-go.

Listen to Jordan talk about the new tracks and other feature and comfort enhancements to the the S-Series combines for 2014. [wpaudio url=”http://zimmcomm.biz/farm-progress/fps-13-johndeere-danner.mp3″ text=”Interview with Jordan Danner, John Deere”]

Fueling the Farm Progress Show

Jamie JohansenAudio, Equipment, Farm Progress Show, Growmark

fps-13-685-editedYou can only imagine the fuel consumption during the Farm Progress Show. GROWMARK and FS have sponsored the fuel for the largest outdoor farm show for the last 30 years and expect to go through about 2,500 gallons this year. That amount is down from previous years because the field demonstrations had to be cancelled.

Gerald Doty retired from the cooperative seven years ago and was asked to come back and run the fueling station. He eagerly agreed to do a it for three years, but has been here ever since. Gerald said it was a great opportunity for him to stay in-touch with the industry.

“GROWMARK and FS have sponsored fuel for the Farm Progress Show for over 30 years. Typically they would get 50 gallons of free fuel in exchange for us putting a fueled by FS sticker on their equipment, but this year because there wasn’t any field demonstrations we have cut that back to 25 gallons. Here we do this in cooperation with Evergreen FS. Evergreen FS takes care of all the fuel needs inside the fences and we take care of the equipment they need for demonstrations and golf carts.”

Melissa SandfortAgribusiness, Data Collection, Fertilizer, seed

steyerIn a crowded marketplace, Steyer Seeds continues to innovate as a growing, progressive company with access to the best genetics and a new proprietary crop management tool marrying farmers’ data with seed attributes.

ACRES (Advanced Crop Revenue Enhancement System) is an innovative, new program that was unveiled earlier this year at the 48th National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Ky. ACRES combines on-farm data about soil attributes, crop rotation, etc. with the unique performance attributes of seed, chemical and fertilizer products to ensure optimal performance.

ACRES offers customers the following benefits:
• Steyer has access to all trait platforms so trait rotation is taken into account in order to avoid insect resistance to Bt events
• Order placement component ties into Steyer’s inventory in real time
• Geo-fulfillment component to improve delivery efficiencies
• Herbicide sensitivity ratings on hybrids are noted

ACRES is built upon the Data-Driven Farming System by MyFarms to combine proprietary product knowledge with the data farmers own and manage to improve crop production. ACRES leverages the core structure of MyFarms to provide a robust, comprehensive crop management tool that allows farmers to benefit from Steyer’s experts to ensure success.

Image 3This year at the 60th Annual Farm Progress Show in the John Deere exhibit there is a restored 1951 John Deere A Tractor that 16 year-old Austin Rhoda restored and is going to be raffled off later this fall. All the proceeds go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Austin was a patient at St. Jude for 3 years while he was being treated for Leukemia.  Now, Austin tells us he loves being around tractors and wanted to help support the organization that helped him and his family so much in their time of need.

“They just treat you like family”

The tractor raffle will conclude on September 15, 2013.

Arclin Introduces NitroGain UI Urease Inhibitor

Talia GoesAgribusiness, General

ArclinArclin, a chemistry and applications company for the building, design, energy and agriculture industries, and Eco Agro Resources, makers of agricultural nutrient products, announced today that Arclin will be the exclusive seller of Eco Agro’s nitrogen urease inhibitor in the United States. Arclin will offer the fertilizer additive as part of its NitroGain™ suite of products. Called NitroGain™ UI, the safe and innovative product reduces nitrogen loss from urea-based fertilizers, giving crops more time to absorb vital nutrients and lessening nitrogen runoff into ground water and streams.

Blended with UAN (urea ammonium nitrate) fertilizers, NitroGain™ UI urease inhibitor reduces nitrogen loss by hindering the conversion of nitrogen to ammonia and carbon dioxide. Nitrogen thus stays in the soil longer, helping increase crop health and yield and protecting water sources by reducing runoff. By increasing nitrogen efficiency, NitroGain™ UI can also reduce fertilizer costs. Patent-pending, it is based on n-butyl triophosphoric triamide, or NBPT, technology.

Nitrogain™ UI has low toxicity and is non-carcinogenic, making it considerably safer than other commercially available urease inhibitors. It can be used either to coat urea granules or mixed with urea ammonium nitrate systems. Its most common applications are nitrogen-focused crops like corn, cotton, rice, coffee and wheat, and turf grasses.
