John Deere Operations Center Adds New Functions

Kelly MarshallAgribusiness, Apps, Audio, Cloud, Data Collection, John Deere, NAFB

The John Deere Operations Center is getting an upgrade.  A new software release for the cloud-based platform will offer more user-friendly tools and features, allowing growers to collect and access their farm information and collaborate with their advisors more easily than ever.

nafb-16-deere-flandersAt the National Association of Farm Broadcasting Trade Talk last week, Jake Flanders with John Deere Intelligent Solutions was on hand to talk about the upgrades, including a new batch of mobile apps.

Flanders says they have gotten very positive feedback on the new MyOperation and My Analyzer Apps. “Some of our customers who were early adopters during the harvest season, just for one season, said they couldn’t imagine farming without them,” he said.

Other new Operations Center features include: Maintenance Manger and My Maintenance App, Application and Harvest Seed Maps and HarvestLab Constituent Maps – both in the Field Analyzer Maps, a new competitive display compatibility and a More Tools page.

“We actually set up our system to be open to connect with other software providers out there,” said Flanders.

Farmers Edge Tackles Data Start to Finish

Kelly MarshallAgribusiness, Audio, NAFB

nafb-farmersedge-jon-labine Jon Labine of Farmers Edge is in the business of making big data a small job for growers.

Farmers Edge takes farmers from start to finish, tackling soil sampling, zone sampling, data analytics, yield applications and yield mapping. From all that data the company then provides growers with a profit map, proving their own worth.

“[Precision] takes the guess work out of farming.” Labine told me at the recent National Association of Farm Broadcasting conference. “If you can be very specific with what you’re trying to do in the zone management you can be much more productive in minimizing your inputs and maximizing your outputs. As we know today, with lower commodity pricing, we need to maximize our yield production and we need to maximize our ROI.”

Farmers Edge’s next big project will be the release of yet another precision tool. The N Manager uses satellite imagery to provide color coded maps of the field throughout the year. This information is then translated to help growers understand the nitrogen use during the season.

Agri-Pulse’s Sara Wyant Honored at #NAFB16

Kelly MarshallAgribusiness, Audio, Award, NAFB

nafb-16-saraDuring the National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB) Night of Honors, Sara Wyant, Agri-Pulse, was given the 2016 Dix Harper Meritorious Service Award.

As member of the NAFB Foundation Board of Directors, Sara has brought her leadership, knowledge of industry, and willingness to work. She has single-handedly added funds for additional scholarships, raised new money for the Foundation, and has been a supporter of the Doan Award to honor past colleague and friend, Stewart Doan. Thank you, Sara, for your dedication to the farm broadcasting industry.

Beyond her leadership in NAFB, Sara is a trusted voice when it comes to agriculture policy. Following a panel during the NAFB convention on agriculture’s reactions to the recent election, I sat down to pick Sara’s brain on how she thought the new administration would take on key agricultural issues.

Trade is very important to the agriculture community, Sara said she along with other small business owners and farmers who are already concerned about trade will quickly be looking to President-Elect Trump to bring some clarity to his statements on trade we have heard throughout the campaign trail.

Listen to my interview with Sara to hear her complete thoughts on trade, appointment new key leadership, immigration and the farm bill here: [wpaudio url=”http://traffic.libsyn.com/zimmcomm/nafb-16-wyant.mp3″ text=”Interview with Sara Wyant, Agri-Pulse”]

FMC Chats with Farm Broadcasters

Kelly MarshallAgribusiness, Audio, FMC, Fungicides, Insecticide, NAFB

nafb-16-fmc-1FMC Corporation was once again a major sponsor at the National Association of Farm Broadcasting convention this year. The annual event held in KC brings in farm broadcasters from around the country and one of the major parts of it is a trade show with over 100 industry partners who are interviewed by the reparters about what’s new in agriculture. FMC is a sponsor of NAFB’s signature Trade Talk.

FMC brought Tom Quade to NAFB to talk about Temitry and Chuck Zimmerman sat down to get the details about the product, as well as the agreement with BASF that made it possible.

FMC has long been a leader in in-furrow crop protection, but this new agreement is ground breaking.

“Now we are combining our patented insecticide technology with new and innovative fungicides. We are the first company to put both insecticide and fungicide in the same product to give growers the ultimate in protection of that seed investment they spend very good money on to get their season started right,” Quade said.
Temitry LFR contains the active ingredients in FMC’s insecticide, Capture, along side the active ingredients in the foliar fungicide, Headline, from BASF.  Research has shown great results with this combination, some tests even reaching as high as a seven bushel yield increase.

Temitry will be available for 2017 growing season.  Learn more about it at www.fmccrop.com and listen to Chuck’s full interview with Quade here: [wpaudio url=”http://traffic.libsyn.com/zimmcomm/nafb-16-quade-temitry.mp3″ text=”Interview with Tom Quade, FMC”]

NACD Talks Conservation Efforts at #NAFB16

Kelly MarshallAg Group, Audio, Conservation, NAFB

nafb-nacd-brent-van-dyke

Brent Van Dyke is incoming President for the National Association of Conservation Districts. He traveled from the southwest corner of the country to the midwest for the National Association of Farm Broadcasting annual convention to share the message of conservation.

“We represent over 3,000 soil and water districts in America. There is a soil and water district in almost every county or perish in America and multiples in some states. So our focus is preserving and utilizing natural resources in a way that is sustainable for agriculture. We believe in protecting the environment as well as being active participants in food and fiber,” Van Dyke told me.

Projects are as diverse as the American countryside; water quality shapes programs in the midwest while water quantity is the issue in the west. The group will also be interested in the Farm Bill and other national policies to ensure farmers have what they need to produce food while protecting the resources needed to do that.

NR Gene Assembles Strawberry Genome

Joanna SchroederFruit, Genotyping

NRGene has successfully assembled the strawberry genome. While most plant, animal and human genomes are diploid with two variant for each gene, the strawberry has eight nearly identical copies of each gene. According to NRGene, this has made accurate phasing difficult, until the company used its DeNovoMAGICTM 3.0. In only two weeks, the octoploid, heterozygous strawberry genome was assembled using reads produced on Illumina sequencing technology and then assembled by NRGene’s cloud-based DeNovoMAGICTM 3.0 software.

screen-shot-2016-11-10-at-9-14-31-am“It’s exciting to see how NRGene’s analysis, combined with data from Illumina sequencers, can be used to quickly and affordably assemble complex genomes, like that of the strawberry,” said Ryan Rapp, associate director, Agrigenomics for Illumina. “We hope that this technology will make genomics accessible to agricultural researchers worldwide, helping to improve the food supply to make it more sustainable and efficient.”

According to a press release, NRGene’s DeNovoMAGICTM 3.0 delivers complete, highly accurate genome assemblies in the form of long, phased sequences using Illumina-based reads. As more genomes are generated, NRGene’s PanMAGICTM is used to compare the complete genome sequences of multiple individual samples to capture the broad genomic diversity, better pinpointing positive traits across all varieties.

“With the data from NRGene, strawberry breeders will be able to accelerate the release of better performing strawberry varieties, creating hardier, more disease-resistant varieties with longer shelf lives,” said Sachiko Isobe, head of the plant genomics and genetics laboratory at Japan’s Kazusa DNA Research Institute.

NRGene states that the success of mapping the strawberry genome demonstrates that complex genomes can be mapped quickly and accurately. Click here for detailed results.
